Even the heavy London snow didn’t prevent 2,400 people from attending the show, and it turned out as two excellent days of networking.

With three simultaneous streams (Developer, Marketing and TV, Handset and OEM) the Apps World event aimed to address the entire app ecosystem, and the challenge of development, design and delivery of apps across multiple platforms. Nick Black, CloudMade Co-Founder and Head of Products, spoke at the conference on how location is helping to create and monetize outstanding apps.

CloudMade also exhibited in Developers Zone where we were busy meeting with new and existing developers.

We are always looking for new ways to meet with developers and understand how we can help you build better user experiences and increase your revenue. You can help us by sending information about any interesting events you plan to attend to iryna@cloudmade.com

At a large event this evening at the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, Nick Black, Co-founder & Head of Products at CloudMade, took to the stage to present CloudMade’s unique offering for mobile or web developers wishing to create and monetize compelling, best selling mobile applications and web sites. 600 companies from across the globe were in the running for this year’s awards, which recognize talented companies from the best grassroot startups.

Commenting on the win Nick said, “It’s a great honor to be recognized by the mobile industry elite as the Best Emerging Startup. We had formidable competitors which makes this award an even greater achievement. We’d like to thank the Silicon Valley Chapter of Mobile Monday for nominating us, our talented developer community which is so vital to the success of our company and the organizers of the awards themselves, for putting on an outstanding contest.”

We recently found out that we’ve been selected as a finalist for the Mobile Premier Awards, the equivalent of the Oscars for mobile start-ups at the world’s largest mobile conference, Mobile World Congress.

The awards replace the popular Mobile Monday Peer Awards from which companies such as Fring, Plazes and Opera have risen to great heights.

This year’s awards have some heavy hitting sponsors including: BlackBerry, 02 Limtus, RCR Wireless, Mashable and Tech Crunch and if past year’s events are anything to go by, will attract the most influential movers and shakers of the mobile industry.

It’s by no means a small feat to be selected as a finalist considering the quality of the other 250 start-ups that were initially chosen, including companies such as Layar and Waze.

CloudMade was voted by the Silicon Valley chapter of Mobile Monday as its nomination for the awards. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the chapter for choosing us and plan to follow through on stage with a compelling presentation when we pitch our products and company to leading VC’s, handset makers, operators and press.

We feel that we’ve made it to the finals because of our unique product offerings, including our comprehensive and flexible mapping platform which is the only one available built solely for developers. It empowers mobile and web developers by giving them the freedom to create exactly the type of apps they envisage, and allows handset vendors and operators to take control of their own destiny, by giving them a key control point for their mobile business to make successful business ventures.

Combine this with our innovative mapping tools that allow anyone to easily contribute to OpenStreetMap, and we’re well on the way to the democratization of geo data and expanding access to it.

Good luck to the other start-ups and we look forward to taking to the stage on February 15th in Barcelona. We hope you can join us.

There are a load of great events happening over the next few weeks. Here are some highlights:

MiniBar June – Friday 26th June 2009

London’s favorite Friday tech meetup, MiniBar, returns to the Truman Brewery this Friday. A great way to unwind after a long, hot week.

GeoMob – 30th June 2009

GeoMob is a relatively new event that has picked up an impressive follow amongst London geo and mobile developers. This month’s event is being hosted by the British Computer Society and features talks on mobile advertising from AdFonic and local search from Spoonfed. Needless to say, the CloudMade team will be there en-masse

iPhone Developers’ Group – London and South-East

If you missed WWDC and want to find out what all the fuss is about, the July 8th meeting of the London and South East iPhone Developers’ Group is not to be missed. CloudMade will be talking about the abilities and limitations of MapKit, CoreLocation and our own iPhone Maps Library.

To hear more about upcoming CloudMade events, follow CloudMade and Nick on twitter.

Tonight CloudMade is excited to sponsor the iPhone Developer VIP Party at Swig bar in San Francisco. Doors open at 9.30 and we expect a full house!

CloudMade has been active at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference this week, engaging with iPhone developers who are creating the next great mapping and location-aware applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Tonight we’re looking forward to talking with many of you one-on-one to discuss your vision on the future of location-aware apps. We also want to find out what features you’d like to see on the iPhone, web and other mobile platforms. Over a Maptini, of course!

Starting with our rich, crowd-sourced maps, CloudMade gives iPhone developers an easier way to build more immersive mapping applications than Apple’s MapKit. Developers will find our suite of iPhone supported Libraries gives you easy access to CloudMade services while supporting a number of unique features like vector data and MapSafe location management service. CloudMade’s non-restrictive licensing even allows for advanced services such as routing, geocoding or tracking functionality – without having to call a lawyer or break the bank.

So if you’re a developer looking for better ways to incorporate maps and location into your app, sign up for a API key at CloudMade’s Developer Zone and get started today. Adding customized CloudMade maps will delight your users and make your app stand-out from the crowd!

For mapping success on the iPhone and iPod Touch, just add:

CloudMade Geo APIs

Your Cool Application

Update: We’ve just announced that CloudMade will be sponsoring WhereCamp 2009. We’re excited to be joining WhereCamp’s organizers and helping to put together the best geo unconference of the year. As well as sponsoring the event, we’ll be sponsoring a special hacking contest to be help from Friday night – Saturday. This is your chance to build something inventive and inspirational using the latest geo APIs around. We’ll provide awesome prizes for the winners and snacks and refreshments for late night hackers. We’ll release more details shortly – keep an eye on our @cloudmade twitter account for details.

WhereCamp will return in 2009 bringing two days of geo hacking, map making and locative fun. This year’s event will be held at SocialText Campus at 655 High Street Palo Alto.

View on a larger map

If you haven’t been to a WhereCamp before, here’s what the WhereCamp organizers say:

“We are self-organized in true bar-camp style. Bring your projects, work and ideas to get feedback from a group of the worlds most passionate social cartographers. Topics are whatever you want them to be. Over the last two years we’ve seen presentations ranging from emergency crisis response such as the work http://ushahidi.com is doing, to local food such as http://www.serveyourcountryfood.net/ to psycho-geography to visualization, to mobile mapping to re-factoring urban landscapes.

The expectation is simply that you participate. It’s your event and we’ll all get out of it what you put into it. As usual the event is zero dollars to enter – we will be seeking sponsorship to make yummy food and other consumables appear.”
