An Animated Year of Edits on OSM

We were inspired by ITO’s “a year of edits on OSM“, but thought that it needed a little extra something – animation!

We took each week’s planet dump over the past year and rendered a frame, coloured by data age, for each. The result is a great visualisation of the progress in OSM in 2008. At the beginning of the year, the U.S. was dominated by the TIGER import, but as this fades we can begin to see points of light appearing at major cities and along highways. In Europe we can see Germany building to an incandescent area and overall activity growing to pick out the features of other countries. Around the world, we can see the lights of mapping progress burning in Chile, South Africa, Australia, Japan, the Philippenes and many more.
